Thomas Flynn Named Recipient of B&Ws Engineering Honors Award
Flynn joined B&W in 1980 and has had various research engineering roles of increasing responsibility, including principal engineer for the design, construction and start-up of the B&W Clean Environment Development Facility, used for combustion research.
Since 2010, Flynn has served as Technical Consultant for the B&W Research Center, where he is responsible for the development and application of fluidization-related technologies, including next-generation utility circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boilers, coal-direct chemical looping for power production and coal-to-liquid conversion.
“Thomas is an internationally-recognized expert in combustion engineering, and has been instrumental in accelerating the commercial development of B&W’s technology in our global markets,” said B&W Global Power Division Sr. Vice President Paul Scavuzzo. “His expertise and dedication make him an excellent recipient for this award and we’re proud to recognize his significant contributions to B&W’s success over more than three decades of service.”
Flynn holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Cleveland State University and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from The University of Akron. He has been a Registered Professional Engineer in Ohio since 1985 and was named a Fellow by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) in 2015 in recognition of his long-term excellence in chemical engineering. He has served on the board of the Akron AIChE Professional Chapter since 1998, including as chairman from 2004-2014.
He also has been active in The University of Akron’s AIChE student chapter and serves on the advisory board for the university’s Department of Chemical & Biomedical Engineering. Flynn, a North Canton resident, is an active adult leader for the Boy Scouts of America, has held leadership roles with the Akron Area Engineers Week program, and dedicates his time, talents and energy to several local science fairs and student engineering programs.
