Posted April 9, 2024

(AKRON, Ohio – April 9, 2024) – Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) announced today that Anthony (Tony) A. Silva has been named the 43rd recipient of the B&W Engineering Honors Award. Since beginning his career with B&W in 1990, Silva has become a highly regarded technical expert in environmental emissions control technologies, a trusted resource for customers and a respected colleague and mentor.

Silva has exceptional expertise and a deep knowledge of B&W’s core environmental emissions control technologies, with diverse experience across a broad range of products and services. He is the Subject Matter Expert for the company’s wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, fabric filters, wet and dry electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), dry sorbent injection (DSI) and other product lines. Silva also was instrumental in the development of B&W’s multi-pollution control, dry and semi-dry acid gas product lines for industrial markets, including waste-to-energy.

“Tony is a consummate professional and he fully embraces each opportunity to take on new technical challenges, demonstrating his flexibility and adaptability,” said B&W Chief Technology Officer Brandy Johnson. “Tony has been integral to the development of B&W’s environmental technologies helping our company become the industry leader that we are today. He has a unique and all-encompassing skillset, having designed, commissioned, researched, and developed many of our technologies during his time with us.”

“Tony also is extremely generous with his time in mentoring young engineers, as well as sharing his knowledge with all B&W colleagues, which results in long term knowledge retention and continued expertise among the engineering teams,” Johnson said. “We are honored that he is part of the B&W team and congratulate him on earning this much-deserved accolade.”

A resident of Wadsworth, Ohio, Silva holds a Bachelor of Science of Chemical Engineering from the University of Toledo. He has served as an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) PTC40 Committee Member (Flue Gas Desulfurization Testing) since 2005, and as the Committee Chair since 2021. He also was a lead author of the 41st and 42nd editions of B&W’s engineering publication, Steam/its generation and use.

The B&W Engineering Honors Award was conceived in 1983 to recognize individuals who are selected by their peers for their extraordinary long-term contributions, commitment, hard work and efforts that have left an enduring mark of excellence on their colleagues, the company and its customers.
